Consignment Selling Software for UK
24 May 2005
Hi Andy
I see you are based in the UK so I hope you can point me in the right direction.
I am launching a consignment selling business in South West London at the end of June 2005 called Auction It For More. Website and Marketing literature are currently being produced.
I am struggling to find a consignment management software package that runs in the UK (there seems to be a lot available in the U.S. that only run on the U.S. ebay market place but nothing comparable over here).
Do you have any ideas or suggestions.
Regards
David Foster

Hi David,

Your only choice at the moment is Liberty 4 Trading Assistants, it's a US-developed product but they have recently released an international version that supports the UK. It's a big download but on the CD.

Here is a directory search for consignment packages that support eBay UK, it will give you updated results if and when new products appear. It's also worth checking the non-consignment specialist management tools.

Hope that helps a little!

Hi Andy
Thanks for your quick reply.
I did not realise that Liberty 4 do a UK compatible version and I will probably go with that.
A bit expensive but in my experience you pay for what you get.
Thanks and great site you've got here!

AuctionTeller (www.auctionteller.com) claim that they will have full support for the UK about now (indeed there was an announcement message for their users yesterday about currencies on the international sites). This software appears to specialise in what you want. I looked at Liberty4 and whilst I found the staff helpful, the program seemed to suffer from over-complication. just getting it to work proved a challange!

Thanks for the update. I've checked with AuctionTeller and they say they currently support Canada, Germany, UK and US, with France and Australia being added later this week.

Up to date details are here

I have come across BCSS, who say they support the UK and have an eBay module. I have been trying to get more information but they do not appear to be responding. Perhaps Andy can have a try?

I cannot find any reviews anywhere of their software.

Hi Ian

I found a web page back in August last year that said BCSS was an illegal rip off of "Consignment Shop Software" and I removed it from the site (it used to be listed). The web page I found has since been altered to be more generic (it's here) but I don't know what that might indicate - if anything.

At the time I had some correspondence with Bill Hawkins of Consignment Shop Software and their program did not integrate with eBay then. As far as I can tell it still doesn't - it's more targeted to traditional consignment stores that sell retail rather than on eBay, which is a large industry in the US.

That's an interesting location you are based in! Are you consignment selling there?

Hi Andy

Thanks for the information. I downloaded the standard 'trial' from BCSS and it looked interesting. I have not had a look at their eBay integration module yet however.

Not wishing to sound mercenary about this but if it works why not use it? Let's face it a lot of software borrows heavily from those around it.

Are Best Consignment Software taking legal action?

BTW we have been in Andorra for 3 years but we are coming back to the UK in July. I will keep in touch as I am considering a very interesting (to me!) opportunity in the consignment selling market.

Hi Ian,

That's your call of course. The issue as I understood it was not one of borrowing but a complete copy - I don't know if legal action is being taken.

Personally, I would be extremely cautious about running my business using (allegedly) bootleg software that may not be supported or updated. eBay is always changing and developers have to be very alert to keep their software current and working - auction management is not a buy once and it works forever kind of application (unfortunately!)

David,

There is also another package available called Auctionworx. It is very comprehensive, has been developed specifically for the UK market and is supported from the UK.

Let me know if this is of interest and I will find out more. e-mail is best on stone.marcus@gmail.com

Hi Marcus, I haven't heard of Auctionworx (although there is Marketworks, who were previously known as Auctionworks).

Can you tell me anymore about it?

Andy,

Apologies for the slow reply, but there have been a number of exciting developments at our end since my last posting!

We (Auctioning4u) have now purchased the AuctionWorx IP and the development team. This has been done so we can use the software to support our expanding network of drop-off shops in the UK. More details on AuctionWorx are provided here www.auctioning4u.com/AuctionWorx/

Right now however we are focussed upon developing additional functionality and rolling the system out to new shop locations we have gained through our recent acquisition of Auctionicity Whilst this is being undertaken the software is not commercially available.

In the meantime if any budding entrepreneurs are interested in joining our team by starting an Auctioning4u drop-off franchise please visit us at

Thanks,
Marcus

I have had some correspondence from Steve Henning, owner of Best Consignment Shop Software (BCSS), who took exception to my reporting (see above) of statements on the Consignment Shop Software web site.

Henning told me the statements made on the Consignment Shop Software web site were untrue and gave me his side of the story, which I invited him to post here.

To summarize, Henning was (as I understand it from his email) previously a reseller of Consignment Shop Software but fell out with Hawkins over commissions, and had his software written from scratch, not reverse engineered from Consignment Shop Software.

I do not know where the truth lies in this matter and it is not my place to try and find out. In my opinion Hawkins and Henning should resolve this between themselves, in a court of law if necessary. I would be happy to report the outcome here.
