UK sellers on Amazon.com how do you handle returns ?
1 Feb 2015
We have been asked several times to list on Amazon.com. The major problem we have is their free returns policy. ie you pay for the return of the item no matter what the reason.

We have minimal (less than 0.5%) returns through ebay and our website to the USA and Canada, and our average cost price is less than £10 so a 'free' return to the UK would lose us more money,

How do other UK sellers manage this ?

An approach someone suggested is using a parcel forwarding service like bundlebox.com for your returns address. They will group up all your returns then send as a batch to the UK once per month.

(Dave, if you are reading this your email address bounced so you couldn't complete registration. It was a good suggestion so I hope you don't mind me posting it!)

Hi

We sell on Amazon and DO NOT have to offer free returns from Amazon, when a return is requested you can choose who pays. The biggest problem with Amazon over eBay is that customers have an automatic right to return for ANY reason at all no questions, but if that's the case they do pay the return themselves.

Just spotted this news about Amazon DE/FR/IT which looks related:

SellerEngine wrote:

This news is for sellers on Amazon.fr, Amazon.it and Amazon.de:

Effective March 12, 2015 all sellers must provide a return address in the country they sell.

If no return address is provided, sellers are required to pay the return cost for all returns, no matter the reason of the return, or provide a prepaid return label to the customer.

Yup, its true.

We had a French Amazon customer saying that returning their item would cost too much, closely followed by an Amazon CS message asking us to supply a pre-paid returns label.

If you sell on an Amazon marketplace website in a country that is not your business location, you should be familiar with our international returns policies.

Customers buying on Amazon expect a straightforward product return experience. In order to create a consistent return experience, we require you to either (1) provide a local address in their elected country for returns, or (2) pay for return shipping on all returns. For example, if you sell on Amazon.co.uk, you must either provide a return address within the United Kingdom or provide free return shipping.
Might make things a lot more interesting for those selling clothing !
