How To Spot An Online Buyer Liar

I am sure that we have all had them, the dubious claims for non delivery or a 'faulty item' but how do you pinpoint a dishonest buyer, and what do you do about it ?

I only have a small answer for you... If you are talking about selling on eBay, we have a free tool that can help shed some light on suspicious buyer behavior. It's just a simple replacement for eBay's former Advanced Search by Bidder tool (I think they had it live for like 8-15 years before sunsetting it last year) which shows other items bought by the buyer within the last couple months...

You might see identical items bought from another seller at a lower price afterwards. Or a higher quality item, or one bundled with something else, etc. You get the picture...

Check it out here (if we're talking about eBay)....

I have tried your system on the odd occasion and it does show history, but what is needed is an automated system that links with the likes of Linnworks, Channel Advisor and the rest that will automatically flag up a 'dishonest' or suspect buyer based on previous activity.

Robber Stopper is another solution, that is still in development, which is based on problems encountered with delivery addresses. ie non delivery, SNAD etc.

We can usually spot a scam from the tone of the message when they claim an item not delivered, but an alert before dispatching an item would be fantastic and save a lot of sellers a lot of time and money.

As far as eBay I look at the obvious.
Go to the buyer/bidders page and see FB.
Anyone with over 20% neg FB I add to my BB list.
If someone has bid/won an item of yours and you get paranoid or just have that oh so common *FRAUD ALERT* going off in your head.. I immediately throw on the BB list and send them a message along the lines of, "Congratulations for winning the auction of ""! If you're still interested in the product I will ship out immediately after receiving payment."
By the response to that message I can usually judge whether they are going to be honest buyer or not.
I've had some say a simple, "Yes, ship" or "Please ship immediately". Those short unconnected answers tell me that they have no interest or excitement in getting the product thus saying there may be an increased chance that I could get an unfair defect or SNAD with some issues.

On the other hand I more often get something along the lines of, " Thank you! Paypal is processing payment. Thanks for the service!"
That always comforts me more because I don't generally have responses like that turn around on me.

@ Thomas Bailey

I remember those days of looking at a buyers feedback before deciding if I should dispatch their order with tracking or not, seems so long ago

The thing is, when you get busy it is not possible to do that.

If you apply for a loan or credit card you get checked, so why not for an online delivery ?

I don't understand. If you send out an item with a tracking #, how can they claim it wasn't delivered?
Is this more of a problem for people operating on thin margins that don't use tracking #s?

I have yet to have a dishonest buyer, though I've had the occasional crazy unreasonable one.

@Bigian13 You can take a look at this website: www.safe-markets.com/
This portal works largely as a meeting ground for online sellers who share fraudulent buyer experiences and the information is documented for future reference, creating a history of such buyers.

@ESH

Sites like that are great, but they are not automated.

I wish that we had time to log in and enter every buyers details and check their rating before we manually adjust their order if needed.

As I have previously said, what is needed is a system that integrates with the major software providers such as Linnworks, Channel Advisor, and the rest that will automatically flag up a dubious address.

In the UK their is really only one company that can provide this information and that is Royal Mail.

If Royal Mail were to offer an automated service that would flag up cerain addresses that had a history of non delivery claims, this would be ideal. It could be along the same lines of credit check companies such as Experian. You don't know why there is a problem, just that there is a problem.

If you are yet to meet a dishonest buyer than you should think yourself very lucky or at least let us in to your secret !

Unfortunately even with tracking, some people will still try to claim that an item has not been delivered. At least with tracking, the seller stands a better chance of not receiving a claim against them.

With regard to the margins, yes, ours are slim. However we have contacted customers, mainly in the USA and Canada, who have moaned about no tracking numbers when we dispatched orders and all have said that they would not pay the one extra dollar to have a tracked parcel.

Bit of a Catch 22 situation.

Fortunately more than 99.5% of our orders get through without a problem. Just wish I could resolve that last 0.5%.
