New Amazon Title Length Policy

Starting from July 15, 2015, Amazon has put a tighter restriction on the title length of listings. New listings created after July 15, 2015 with a title length of more than 200 characters will be suppressed from search and browse. Existing listings with a title length of more than 200 characters will not be suppressed. If your listing is created after July 15 and has a title length of more than 200 characters, customers will not be able to find your listings until you have shorted your title to less than 200 characters. See below for the email sent to sellers by Amazon.

Dear seller,

Your success is important to us, and our research shows that listings with clear product information make it easier for customers to find, evaluate, and purchase products.
To improve the customer experience, all listings sellers create after July 15, 2015, with a title length more than 200 characters will be suppressed from search and browse. Existing listings with a title length more than 200 characters will not be suppressed, but the titles may be shortened by Amazon to meet this criteria.
When creating new listings, make sure to keep the title, which is the Product Name, for each product less than 200 characters. Customers will not be able to find your listings created after July 15 until you have shortened their title to less than 200 characters.

It's a strange way of going about things... allowing titles longer than 200 characters, but suppressing it if it is. Why not just not allow people to create titles over 200 characters?!

200 is a huge title anyway, and if you are using all those characters it's probably stuffed full of keywords and not buyer friendly.

Great point! Sellers should try to keep their title as short and informative as possible. CPC Strategy has recommended the following for the general flow for titles:

Brand + Style + Product Type + Material + Keyword + Branded Color + Color

Cleaner titles also present a better brand image and optimizing titles also allow listings to generate more relevant searches.
