Own eCommerce Store Or Marketplace?

Since we all are sellers, I would like to know your preference and opinion on where to sell on the Internet. What is the best way for online selling?

Selling on marketplaces like eBay, Amazon, Etsy etc

Or

Selling independently on own online store?

Or

sell on both?

Why?

It depends on many factors. For some retailers a marketplace strategy may be a boon or a bust for others. There are a lot of factors that need to be taken into consideration, including the type of products you sell, the competition in your category, marketplace fees and restrictions, and so on.

I've had success on marketplaces. I have 2 websites but they do not do the business that I get on the marketplaces. For my niche, other than Amazon and eBay, I've really only had significant business on Reverb.com. I've tried Rakuten (biggest rip off on the planet, at least in the US), Sears, NewEgg, 11Main, and others that I have forgotten. I'm still on NewEgg and 11Main but the business from those places is negligible. For the websites, I've not found a way to get traffic within budget. I basically break even on the websites but I keep trying to find ways to drive more traffic. So, generally, if you want to start making sales (and profit), marketplaces provide the lowest barriers and best bang for the buck.

Sell in as many places as is profitable.

eBay and Amazon are the most obvious due to the high volume of buyers, but your own website can be just as profitable, if not more so, if you drive marketplace customers there.

Thank you, Jax for giving a detailed insight of all the available options to sell. I totally agree with you. One should start off with the marketplaces and once you build the trust of buyers and reputation and experience, you should convert them to your own customers who will buy from your own online store as @Bigian13 has mentioned. But sometimes it gets hard to deal with the marketplaces and their rules and policies.

What about Amazon marketplaces? Which Amazon marketplace(s) do you guys think is/are the most prevalent? And also for those EU sellers, do you sell cross-border and in which marketplaces? (eg. UK seller also selling on Amazon DE)

I sell on Amazon in the US and Canada. I've looked at other Amazon sites, and feel it would be successful, but Amazon puts so many barriers to entry on the EU and Japanese sites that the time spent is not worth the reisk.

That's absolutely true! We think that for a lot of sellers, they see the opportunities and advantages that come with expanding internationally but with all the different regulations and taxes for each marketplace, they would pose as potential barriers to entry.

Is there anything that Amazon can do, or what would help you or other sellers in the same situation as you, eliminate those barriers and make you reconsider global expansion?

As someone who helps a lot of online retailers, this year particularly I have seen a large increase in business focusing on the idea of their own online store.

Amazon & eBay will be king for most, but there is definitely a need for more additional channels and a dedicated website if done well can be a real benefit.

Though there are some sellers who do not sell on Amazon & eBay and purely rely on their website and other niche channels such as NOTHS.

I think if there was a 1 size fits all model for ecommerce (which there is not) I would say that getting your products onto as many relevant channels as possible is key (of course, making sure you do a great job on them too)
All the best,
