UK Consignment software
13 Nov 2006
Hi

This is my first post here. I would like to ask a few questions and get some advise from anyone who's running a drop-off shop selling items on a consignment basis. I'm based in the UK.

I know there are a lot of companies out there offering a good service regarding software for such a company and just as many critics! which does make it quite overwhelming when trying to siv through all the info on this site trying to find the best software for a company which is still on the drawing board!

What I do know is there is a lot of experience on this forum and hopefully some nice people out there willing to pass on some advise. I hear so much on this forum of people trying this program and that program and going around in circles. What I would like in a program though is ease of use, reliability and easy on the pocket.

I look forward to receiving your replies.

Hi stimbow,

Welcome to the group. Check out the directory and click on consignment to view the choices. I am personally biased towards AuctionSound. It is easy to use, comprehensive, and handles everything for you including customer database, listing, auction templates, check printing, image hosting, reporting, and financials. It is by far the best web-based program out there. You also have Liberty 4, Infopia, and a few others. Auction Wagon is pretty good for a desktop solution. Find a program that was developed for consignment purposes. Some of the applications out there (mpire, Kyozou, etc) were designed for other uses and then had some features bolted on to try and make it work. If you want a free live web demo, AuctionSound can do one for you that takes about 15 minutes. Good Luck!

Thanks bhogue.

Thanks for your comments, I'll try and steer clear of the programs not originally designed for the purpose of consignment selling.

Is there any secrets between chosing a web or Desktop based software program or is it just individually preference?

I'll also have a look at the 3 Web based programs you mentioned and take the AuctionSound demo. It should give me a good starting point.

I'll let you know how I get on

stimbow,
There are two great features for web based, one is the ability to access your data from anywhere, and the other is real time communication with eBay. Everything will be up to the minute (or at least its supposed to be). Also, updates will occur automatically, you dont have to download new versions or wait for a disc to show up in the mail.

With desktop, all your information will be tied to your workstation at the office. You won't be able to view anything from your house or any other alternate location. Also, if there were a fire, or someone broke in to your store and stole the computer, all of your information is gone, whereas with web based, all your data is stored on remote servers. Web based software is generally more flexible, it gives you more options when it comes to running your business.

Hi stimbow,

Here is some background reading you may find interesting. Note that the consignment posts are a little outdated now but you might still find them useful.

Hi Stimbow,

Are you thinking of a shop or home based solution? Also, what are your aspirations in terms of items sold per day? Any specialisation in terms of what you are selling?

Thanks Andy and bhogue

All this information is great and some of the programs seem perfect, but I'm slowly going through the different possibilities for now and having a look at what the companies are offering and comparing them.

Hi Auctioning4u

It will be shop based selling unique consignment items. I want a program which will handle a few items sold per day right up to whatever is possible for a consignment shop. In the future I want to open a few more shops and have the software linked up between them.

Thanks all for your help.
