Internet Marketing. What Have You Tried And Did It Work ?
18 Jul 2016
With so many different ways to spend your money marketing your products I am intrigued to see what success or failure other sellers have had.

With so many different channels to sell on you could spend your money with Amazon, eBay, Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Bing, SEO, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, mail shots, flyers, print ads, blogs / review sites, as well as the other selling channels 'sponsored products' and paid for optimisation programmes.

To keep it simple, why not list your top three successes and failures as well as the type of category you sell in. Some people do not pay for marketing. If so please post and say so.

Like I say, I am intrigued.

PS If you are selling your product / service for marketing, please post elsewhere. This post is asking for people that have tried marketing.

@Bigian13 Couldn't agree more with this.

SEO is the best way but so time consuming and more of a long term reward but so important if you want to save on Google.

I found Google Shopping better than Adwords though.

The success of marketing budgets can differ massively depending on any number of factors such as the product-type, market-type & competitiveness. However, a lot comes down to the knowledge and resource with the company to manage them.

For ecommerce retailers I have worked, both with and for, the most successful channels have been:

- Google Shopping
- Email Marketing
- Organic Search

But there are lots more worth mentioning such as Adwords, Marketplaces and Remarketing. Display is the one to stay clear of especially when the objective is direct response or margins are tight.

No matter what you try you should always make sure you have a working and usable site before attempting any type of campaign.

Okay, here's one for you.

As a challenge I set one of my colleagues a task. To get a product we sell on our own website listed on the 'Sponsored Links' part of an eBay listing for the same product, sold by us.

Within 2 days the product that was previously selling well on eBay had declined in sales, but website sales for the same product were much better. After we had taken into account CPC, time and effort for the campaign, against eBay fees (and dodgy buyers) we had actually made a better margin, and eBay had made less money !

So why do they do it ? They direct buyers to off site marketplaces (which you are not allowed to do in your own listing) and, in our case, make less money.

Has anybody else had a similar experience ?

Hey Bigian13,

Honestly, I cannot write down 3 things that worked and 3 things that would fail because I feel that the important factors that affect you failing or being successful in an Internet Marketing through social media platforms are:

- Your Product - What is it? There are products that are far better off in Pinterest or Instagram, than it is on Twitter, for example. For what age gap (if any) is your product?

- Your Audiences - Where are they? Which social media platform do they usually hang around? What gender does your product target?

- Time - When are your audiences most free? What time are they usually online? Do days of the week differ on their availability? When is best time for you to post that will garner most attention?

Once you try and test out all these, you will be able to figure out which are YOUR top 3 and YOUR last 3. Because it will vary. Facebook may be useful for me, but not for you.

I suggest you try all the social media platforms there are available, and try to gauge and see for yourself.

I hope this helps!

This may seem to be a general point. But this is the core tip of any marketing. If your company is offering product/services, convince customers how they can help them and in what ways. Many large companies are trying to prove this only. Create a sense of demand and urgency and it would definitely work. If you see some advertisements on television, you will come to know this.

I am a little late on the reply to this post, but I will give a general overview of what has worked well (on average) for the clients I have worked with.

1) SEO
2) Email Marketing
3) Google Shopping

I don't really have a bad list, though I have found general PPC Adwords are no where near as effective as Google Shopping.

How does general "print marketing" work for you guys? Do you send any flyers/promotions out with your orders?
All the best,
